Standing Strong

'Megan's Story: Finding Safety, Support'

Five years is a long time to endure a verbally abusive and emotionally abusive marriage. Megan had endured the endless insults and threats for many years from her husband and tried to keep things calm and as normal as she could for her children. She had always worked full-time and continued to prepare herself for a better paying job. Megan had finally gathered enough courage one day to get her and her children away from the abuse.

Shortly after she left, her husband began following her to work and once she arrived he would constantly calling her. He broke into her car and home, and finally poured gasoline all over the interior of her car.

Megan's employer terminated her employment because her husband's behavior was perceived as a threat to the safety of other employees. Suddenly, Megan found herself without an income, without a home, and without a sense of safety.

Megan called Christine Ann Domestic Abuse Services 24-hour helpline. After validating her feelings, her helpline advocate offered Megan a range of Christine Ann Center services to help protect herself and her children - everything from assistance filing orders of protection to emergency shelter. Within days, Megan and her family had moved safely into our emergency shelter. Megan stayed in shelter until her husband was arrested. She obtained a restraining order, sought out a new job and received rental assistance for a new apartment.

By making one call, Megan not only learned of legal rights and resources available to her, but she also began to realize the depth of her own strength, courage and capacity to protect herself and her children.
